Abia Gov to Revive Poultry Farming, Welcomes Israeli Investment

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has unveiled plans to breathe new life into the long-abandoned Ogwe Golden Chicken, a once-thriving poultry farm.

This comes as his administration considers an investment partnership with Israeli agribusiness giant, AgroTop Israel, to boost productivity and drive economic growth in the state.

According to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Ukoha Njoku Ukoha during a meeting with a delegation from AgroTop Israel, led by its Business Development Manager, Mr. Ofer Zuntz, Governor Otti reaffirmed his government’s commitment to reviving moribund state-owned investments.

He emphasised that poultry farming is a key part of his economic strategy and assured the investors of a favorable business climate.

“One of the successful poultry farms we had in the past was the Ogwe Golden Chicken. Unfortunately, it has been abandoned for years, but we have plans to restore it, just like we are reviving many other neglected industries and projects,” the governor said.

Governor Otti noted that although the farm’s infrastructure may have become outdated, it still provides a viable foundation for a major comeback.

He hinted at the possibility of concessioning the facility to AgroTop Israel and its partners if discussions yield positive outcomes.

The Israeli company, known for its presence in over 50 countries, expressed keen interest in partnering with Abia State in livestock farming, including poultry and piggery.

Mr. Zuntz assured the governor that AgroTop Israel prioritizes long-term investments rather than short-term gains.

“We are not here for white elephant projects. Our business thrives on sustainability, and we are confident that working with Abia State will be a mutually beneficial venture,” Zuntz stated.

He also commended Governor Otti’s open-door policy, describing it as a refreshing approach to governance in Nigeria.

The potential revival of Ogwe Golden Chicken is part of Governor Otti’s broader efforts to reposition Abia State as an agribusiness hub. His administration has been actively engaging investors to resuscitate abandoned projects and create employment opportunities.

Also speaking, the founding director of Max Agro Farms, Mr. Ejike Nwankwo, highlighted his company’s collaboration with AgroTop Israel in providing agricultural solutions, particularly in poultry production.

He noted that the proposed investment would enhance food security and stimulate economic activity in the region.

Present at the meeting were key government officials, including the Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Cliff Agbaeze, and Chief Strategy Officer to the Government, Mr. Chinenye Mba-Uzoukwu. Their involvement signals the state’s commitment to fast-tracking investment negotiations.

With the discussions gaining momentum, expectations are high that the Ogwe Golden Chicken will soon be restored to its former glory.

If successful, the project could transform Abia into a major poultry production hub, creating jobs and boosting revenue for the state.

As Governor Otti continues to attract global investors, the people of Abia remain hopeful that his administration’s vision for economic revitalization will translate into tangible benefits for businesses and households alike.
