The Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) has emerged as the dominant party in the Abia State local government elections, securing victories in 15 of the state’s 17 local government areas. The Young Peoples Party (YPP) won the remaining two LGAs.
The results were announced by the Chairman of the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC), Professor George Chima, at the commission’s headquarters in Umuahia, the state capital.
“We have fulfilled our mandate, despite the challenges,” Chima remarked, adding that the commission had worked tirelessly to promote awareness of the election across Abia.
Chima noted that this election saw over 12 political parties participating, a rare turnout that he described as “a milestone” for the commission.
He confirmed the elections were conducted across all LGAs and described the process as “free, fair, and credible.”
In his closing remarks, Professor Chima congratulated both the winners and the opposition, urging all to maintain peace.
“There are winners and losers in every election, but the priority is to keep Abia peaceful. I encourage everyone to preserve this harmony,” he said.
He also extended his thanks to security agencies for their support and commended political parties for adhering to election guidelines.
