The Abia State Government has officially announced the implementation of a N70,000 minimum wage for its workers, set to take effect this October.
Prince Okey Kanu, the Commissioner for Information, made the announcement following a meeting of the State Executive Council chaired by Governor Otti.
He emphasized that this decision aligns with the Federal Government’s approved minimum wage and reflects the state’s commitment to enhancing the welfare of its civil servants.
Kanu stated, “The state government is dedicated to the minimum wage, and payment will begin within the next few days.” He also indicated that while the national minimum wage serves as a benchmark, the state is open to adjustments as needed.
“If the Governor chooses to exceed the national standard, that’s within his prerogative,” Kanu added.
Confirming this initiative, the Commissioner for Labour and Productivity, Sunny Onwuma, reiterated that Abia State is ready to implement the N70,000 minimum wage for all workers.
