EndSARS: Unical VC makes case on Security

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Obi has expressed concern over the state of Security in the State.

The Vice Chancellor who called on the Cross Rivers State Police command to give priority attention to the Institution stated that Institution has experience series of Security challenges in recent time.

Speaking during her visit to the Commissioner of Police, Cross River State Command, CP Sikiru Akande in his office recently, Prof. Obi noted kidnapping of lecturers and their families as well as Vandalism of their facilities during the EndSARS protest were among many issues which has affected the institution in time past.

She urged the Commissioner to prioritise the Institution’s Security as he pilots the security concerns of Cross River State.

According to the Vice Chancellor, her visit is to seek for the continued partnership of the Police Command and to request them not to relent in their sustained effort to jointly police the university with other security agencies as they have been doing in the past.

Prof. Obi said with the imminent return of students to campus and accompanying challenge of
sheltering a large population in the academic environment, the support of the command is pivotal
and cannot be overemphasized.

In his response, the Commissioner of Police, CP Sikiru Akande assured the Vice Chancellor of the readiness
of his administration to partner with the institution at all times.

The Commissioner bemoaned the massive destruction of facilities during the Endsars protest but nevertheless assured the Vice Chancellor that the solid partnership between the command and the
institution will not afford hoodlums another seamless passage into the university.

The highpoint of the visit was the presentation of a memento by the CP to the Unical helmsman.

The Vice Chancellor was accompanied in the visit by the Director of Centre for General Studies (CGS), Prof
Francisca Bassey, Deputy Registrar, (VC’s office) Mr Moses Obule, Chief Security officer, SP Okon Usani (Rtd), Officer in charge of surveillance, SP Tobias Bobmanuel and other aides of the VC’s office.
