Suspension: We Took Steps for Peace, but Assembly Obstructed It – Fubara

Suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has stated that his administration took every necessary step to restore peace, including complying with the recent Supreme Court judgment, but the state House of Assembly continuously frustrated these efforts.

Despite the ongoing political crisis, he urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Fubara reaffirmed that his leadership had been guided by constitutional principles and a strong commitment to the welfare of the people of Rivers State.

“I address you today with a deep sense of responsibility and calm as we navigate this unfortunate moment in our state’s political history. Since assuming office, we have prioritized the protection of lives and property while ensuring the continuous progress of our dear state,” he said.

Fubara explained that after President Bola Tinubu’s intervention to broker peace, his government acted in good faith by implementing the agreed terms, including reinstating commissioners who had earlier resigned.

He also noted that his administration promptly complied with the Supreme Court ruling to restore normalcy.

“These steps were not for personal gain but to foster peace, unity, and stability in the state. Unfortunately, at every turn, members of the Rivers State House of Assembly frustrated our efforts, making genuine peace and progress difficult,” he added.

Despite political tensions, Fubara maintained that governance remained on track, with salaries paid, key projects ongoing, and security maintained under his administration.

He assured the people of Rivers State that he would continue engaging relevant institutions to uphold democracy and ensure the state’s progress.

President Tinubu had on Tuesday declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and the House of Assembly members for six months.

He also appointed retired Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas as the military administrator to oversee the state’s affairs.
