Nigerian football legend Ahmed Musa has issued a stern warning to the Super Eagles, stating that failing to qualify for the 2026 World Cup would be a “total disaster” for the country’s football.

Musa, who spoke in Ilorin on Sunday, emphasized the importance of qualifying for the World Cup, highlighting the negative impact that missing out would have on the team’s morale and the confidence of upcoming players.

The Super Eagles are currently struggling in their qualifying group, sitting in fifth place behind South Africa, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, and Benin.

However, Musa remains optimistic, believing that the team can still turn their fortunes around.

He identified the upcoming match against Rwanda as a crucial turning point, stating that securing three points would be a significant boost to their qualifying hopes.

Musa also took the opportunity to praise his teammate Taiwo Awoniyi for his generosity in building a functional secretariat for the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) in Ilorin.

He commended Awoniyi’s commitment to giving back to the community, setting an example for other footballers to follow.

The Super Eagles captain, who is currently playing for Kano Pillars in the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL), also expressed his admiration for the improvements made to the local league.

He noted that the competitiveness of the league has increased significantly, citing the recent upset victory of Ikorodu United over Lobi Stars as an example.
