South-East Governors Under Criticism for Inaction on Nnamdi Kanu’s Detention

By Ekpenyong Emmanuel

The South-East Governors have come under intense criticism from Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo sociocultural organization, for their perceived inaction and lack of leadership in securing the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

According to Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the governors’ failure to take concrete steps to address Kanu’s detention has led to widespread frustration and disappointment among the Igbo people.

The organization’s Deputy President, General Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, accused the governors of “playing the ostrich” and abandoning their responsibility to protect the interests of their people.

The criticism comes as Ohanaeze Ndigbo has been ramping up pressure on the federal government to release Kanu, who has been detained since 2021.

The organization has argued that Kanu’s continued detention is a major obstacle to peace and stability in the South-East region.

In a statement, Isiguzoro warned that the governors’ inaction could have serious consequences, including erosion of trust and confidence in their leadership.

He urged the governors to take immediate action to address Kanu’s detention and demonstrate their commitment to the welfare and interests of their people.

The South-East Governors have yet to respond to Ohanaeze Ndigbo’s criticism, but the controversy has highlighted the deepening divide between the governors and the Igbo people over Kanu’s detention.
