Kano Court Sentences Five to Death for Murder


A Kano State High Court has sentenced five Men to death by hanging for calling a 67-year-old woman, Dahare Abubakar, a witch and stabbing her to death. The defendants, Da’luta Ibrahim, Abdulaziz Yahaya, Faisal Yahaya, Ibrahim Abdu, and Ayuba Abdulrahman, we’re convicted of culpable homicide.

According to the prosecution counsel, Lamido Abba-Sorondinki, the convicts committed the offence on November 15, 2023, in Dadin Kowa Village, Wudil, Kano. They conspired to kill Dahare Abubakar after suspecting her of being a witch, and followed her to the farm where they stabbed her to death with dangerous weapons.

Justice Usman Na’abba ruled that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt and sentenced the five convicts to death by hanging. The sixth defendant, Nabi’a Ibrahim, was acquitted due to lack of evidence.

The prosecution presented four witnesses and two exhibits, including the defendants’ extra-judicial statements and a medical report confirming the victim’s death. The defence counsel, Ma’aruf Yakasai, presented eight witnesses, including the defendants, to testify in their defence.
