The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the immediate retirement of senior police officers who have either served for more than 35 years or are above the age of 60.
This decision was made during the Commission’s first extraordinary meeting, held on Friday, 31st January 2025, and was communicated in a statement by Ikechukwu Ani, Head of Press and Public Relations.
The move follows a review of previous policies regarding police personnel’s length of service.
At the 24th Plenary Meeting held in September 2017, the Commission had approved that police officers’ dates of appointment be considered from their enlistment date.
However, this decision has now been revisited and found to conflict with the Public Service Rule No 020908, which stipulates retirement after 35 years of service or upon reaching 60 years of age.
According to the Commission, “The decision contradicted the principle of service merger in the public service and violated existing public service retirement rules.” Therefore, the Commission resolved to enforce the proper retirement guidelines.
The extraordinary meeting was presided over by the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd), mni, and included prominent figures such as retired Justice Adamu Paul Galumje, Hon Commissioner representing the Judiciary; DIG Taiwo Lakanu (rtd), fdc, Honourable Commissioner representing the Police; and Chief Onyemuchi Nnamani, Secretary to the Commission.
The Commission’s decision has now been forwarded to the Inspector General of Police for implementation.
