The Sultanate Council of Sokoto has announced that Muslims in Nigeria are expected to sight the new moon on Wednesday, marking the beginning of the Islamic month of Sha’aban.
The sighting of the new moon is a significant event in the Islamic calendar, as it signals the start of a new month and helps Muslims prepare for the holy month of Ramadan.
Prof. Sambo Junaidu, the Waziri of Sokoto and Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, urged Muslims to be on the lookout for the new moon on Wednesday evening.
“We call on all Muslims to sight the new moon and report its sighting to the nearest district or village heads, who will then notify the Sultan of Sokoto for official confirmation,” Junaidu said.
The Sultanate Council also reminded Muslims of the importance of the new moon sighting, which is a tradition that dates back to the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
The council prayed for Allah’s guidance and blessings as Muslims embark on this new month, saying
“May Allah (SWT) help us in the discharge of this religious duty. Amen.”
