The economic partnership between Nigeria and China has reached new heights, with the trade volume between the two nations surpassing $20 billion in 2024.
This significant milestone was announced by Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, during the 2025 Chinese Lunar New Year celebrations in Abuja.
According to Ambassador Yu, Nigeria has emerged as a crucial partner for China in Africa, with the country serving as China’s largest engineering contract partner, second-largest export market, and third-largest trade partner on the continent.
“Last year, the trade volume between China and Nigeria exceeded $20 billion.
Nigeria is our largest engineering contract partner, the second-largest export market, and the third-largest trade partner in Africa,” he said.
The ambassador expressed confidence in the potential for further growth in trade between the two nations, stating, “We aim to increase our trade volume even higher because of the immense potential we see in Nigeria.”
This optimism is fueled by the recent elevation of the Nigeria-China relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership, which is expected to drive increased cooperation in areas such as trade, tourism, and culture.
In his remarks, Oraeluno Obi Raphael, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy, highlighted the mutual benefits of the Nigeria-China partnership.
“Collaborative efforts in trade, tourism, and the creative economy have not only enriched our societies but also opened avenues for economic growth and mutual prosperity,” Raphael said.
As Nigeria and China continue to strengthen their economic ties, it is expected that the trade volume between the two nations will continue to grow, driving economic development and prosperity in both countries.
