The Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, has congratulated Prince Abimbola Owoade on his emergence as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo.

On January 12, 2025, it will be nearly two years and eight months since the prestigious Alaafin throne became vacant following the passing of Oba Lamidi Adeyemi. Oba Adeyemi, who ruled for 51 years, was the longest-serving Alaafin in the history of the Oyo Kingdom.

His death in April 2022 at the age of 83 left a significant gap that has sparked a prolonged search for his successor.

In a statement issued by his Director of Media and Public Affairs, Moses Olafare, the Ooni expressed his excitement over the appointment, noting that this momentous decision ushers in a new era of prosperity, unity, and cultural preservation for the people of Oyo.

The Ooni, who also serves as Co-Chair of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria and Permanent Chairman of the Southern Nigeria Traditional Rulers Council, commended the patience demonstrated by the royal family, kingmakers, and the people of Oyo, both at home and in the diaspora, throughout the two-year process.

He also praised the Oyo State Government, led by Governor Seyi Makinde, for providing a conducive environment for a smooth transition.

The Ooni further stated, “We are confident that the new Alaafin-elect will build on the enduring legacy of his predecessors, especially the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, who ruled Oyo with exceptional leadership qualities.

“Now that you have emerged victorious, you have become the father of all, and it is important to unite the people for the growth of Oyo kingdom. Bring everyone together—those who supported you and those who did not—and lead with magnanimity.”

He urged the Alaafin-elect to embrace peace and fairness with all kingmakers, emphasizing that only through impartiality and justice can he serve his people as a beacon of hope and development.

The Ooni also highlighted the deep historical connection between Oyo and Ile-Ife, noting that both kingdoms share a divine origin and a commitment to preserving Yoruba culture.

He stressed that the Alaafin’s throne remains a key pillar of Yoruba traditional governance andheritage, and Prince Owoade’s ascension signifies the continuation of this sacred bond.

“The House of Oduduwa, under the leadership of Arole Oduduwa Olofin Adimula, Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, CFR, Ojaja II, congratulates the Alaafin-elect, Prince Abimbola Owoade, on his appointment as the new custodian of the rich heritage of the Oyo Kingdom,” the statement concluded.

The House of Oduduwa called on all sons and daughters of Oyo, from every walk of life, to rally behind their new monarch and work together to ensure the continued prosperity of the kingdom. Through collective support and unity, Oyo will thrive and maintain its status as a cornerstone of Yoruba greatness.

As this historic moment is celebrated, the House of Oduduwa reaffirmed its commitment to fostering unity among Yoruba monarchs, preserving the cultural identity of the Yoruba people, and promoting the prosperity of all Yoruba communities worldwide.
