BREAKING: Nationwide Blackout As National Grid Collapses First Time In 2025

By Olumide Olusegun

Nigeria’s national power grid has suffered its first major collapse of 2025, just 10 days into the new year, triggering a nationwide blackout.

The disruption has left Nigerians grappling with power outages, exacerbating the ongoing energy challenges faced across the country.

This collapse marks the 13th incident of a grid failure in the past 13 months, signaling persistent issues within Nigeria’s power sector.

The most recent failure saw power generation plummet from 2,111.01 megawatts at 2:00 PM to a mere 390.20 MW by 3:00 PM, according to checks by our correspondent.

The Energy Podcast confirmed the incident, stating, “National Grid Suffers Major Collapse… First in 2025.”

They later reported that power restoration efforts had commenced, with generation reaching 302 MW by 2:40 PM.

Nigeria’s Power Grid Collapses

Nigeria’s national power grid has a long history of instability, with frequent collapses disrupting electricity supply across the country.

In 2022, the grid collapsed multiple times, including one major failure in March that left the entire nation without power for hours. In 2023, the situation worsened, with the grid experiencing multiple collapses, resulting in widespread blackouts and persistent power shortages.

The recurrent grid failures are attributed to a combination of factors, including outdated infrastructure, inadequate maintenance, and frequent fuel shortages that affect power plants.

These issues are further compounded by inadequate investment in the power sector, leading to a decline in electricity generation capacity.

As the country enters 2025, Nigerians continue to face an unreliable power supply, with many hoping for a comprehensive overhaul of the sector to prevent further disruptions.
