In a major breakthrough for Nigeria’s healthcare sector, the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH) has announced plans to offer kidney transplant services starting from 2025.

According to the hospital’s Chief Medical Director, Prof. Ahmed Umdagas, the kidney transplant program is part of ABUTH’s efforts to provide specialized healthcare services to Nigerians and reduce the need for medical tourism.

Prof. Umdagas stated that the hospital has already acquired most of the necessary equipment and trained its personnel to perform kidney transplants. He added that the program will commence in the first quarter of 2025, once the remaining infrastructure is in place.

The kidney transplant program is expected to bring relief to thousands of Nigerians suffering from kidney failure, who currently have to travel abroad for treatment. ABUTH’s program will offer a cost-effective and convenient alternative, with prices significantly lower than those charged by foreign hospitals.

In addition to the kidney transplant program, ABUTH is also expanding its urology services with the establishment of a Urology Centre of Excellence. The centre will offer a range of services, including dialysis, lithotripsy, and other specialized treatments.

Prof. Umdagas expressed his commitment to providing world-class healthcare services to Nigerians, saying, “We are determined to make ABUTH a centre of excellence in healthcare, and the kidney transplant program is a major step towards achieving that goal.”

The hospital’s plans have been welcomed by patients and healthcare professionals, who see it as a major breakthrough for Nigeria’s healthcare sector. With the launch of the kidney transplant program, ABUTH is poised to become a leading healthcare provider in Nigeria, offering specialized services that will improve the lives of thousands of Nigerians.
