FG Assures on January 2025 Implementation of New Minimum Wage

By Ekpenyong Emmanuel

The Federal Government has given assurance that many states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) will implement the new national minimum wage by January 2025.

Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, made this disclosure during a meeting with the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCN) in Abuja.

Dingyadi explained that his ministry is currently assessing the compliance level of various states, as the implementation process has just begun. He noted that while some states have partially implemented the minimum wage, four or five others are yet to fully comply.

On the FCT’s implementation timeline, Dingyadi said: “The FCT said it will comply with the new minimum wage in January. However, your FCT chapter insists on immediate implementation. I am not sure if that demand is entirely fair. “Many states are set to implement it in January. I don’t understand why your FCT chapter is unwilling to accept this timeline. Nevertheless, since you have raised this issue, we will revisit the matter, particularly concerning the federal agencies you mentioned.”

The Minister also urged the ASCN to provide a detailed list of non-compliant agencies to facilitate effective government intervention. He further acknowledged other concerns raised by the delegation, including issues with the Office of the Accountant General and the Federal Civil Service Commission, and assured that these matters would be thoroughly addressed.
