The Kano State Police Command has arrested a 42-year-old man, Hamisu Ibrahim, for impersonating a police officer and extorting money from unsuspecting members of the public in Ungogo Local Government Area.
According to the command spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the suspect pretended to be a Court Duty Police Officer assigned to a court in Ungogo and exploited his fake position to extort money from individuals. He falsely claimed to assist victims in securing bail for their detained relatives.
“At least two victims have testified to being defrauded by the suspect,” Kiyawa revealed in a statement issued on Tuesday.
The arrest followed a tip-off received on November 18, 2024, about a suspicious individual parading himself as a police officer. Acting swiftly, the Commissioner of Police in Kano State, CP Salman Dogo Garba, directed the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ungogo Division to investigate the case, leading to the suspect’s apprehension.
Kiyawa explained, “Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect had been extorting money from innocent citizens by posing as a Court Duty Police Officer. Two persons so far testified that the suspect had extorted money from them under the guise of helping them secure bail for their relatives.”
The police described the arrest as part of efforts to maintain public trust and eradicate criminal activities within the state.
“This arrest is a testament to the commitment of the Police Command to sanitizing the system, protecting the public, and rooting out individuals who undermine the good work of the Police in Kano State,” Kiyawa added.
The command urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities. Citizens can contact the police through the following numbers: 08032419754, 08123821575, and 09029292926.
CP Garba further warned that criminal acts such as impersonation would not be tolerated, assuring that perpetrators would face the full wrath of the law.
