The Kwara State Government has on Wednesday announced the temporary closure of Harmony Transport Services Ltd. (HTSL), popularly known as Kwara Express, to facilitate a comprehensive restructuring aimed at enhancing productivity and boosting economic impact.
Harmony Holdings Ltd., the agency responsible for managing state-owned businesses, confirmed in a statement that all workers in the struggling company will receive full exit benefits as the state embarks on a sweeping modernization of Kwara Express.
The management expressed its appreciation for the workers’ dedication and wished them success in future endeavors.
“This decision was not taken lightly,” said a representative of Harmony Holdings Ltd.
“Restructuring is necessary to ensure that Harmony Transport can meet modern operational standards. Over the years, the company has struggled with maintaining consistent growth, and this has affected its ability to serve the people of Kwara effectively. By addressing these challenges head-on, we can create a more efficient and customer-oriented service.”
The overhaul will focus on upgrading the company’s fleet and infrastructure to incorporate state-of-the-art technology, which is expected to improve operational efficiency and enhance the passenger experience.
Harmony Holdings acknowledged that feedback from the public pointed out the urgent need for improvement, which helped inform the decision to suspend operations temporarily.
“We know this may cause some inconvenience for our valued customers, but we assure you this pause is necessary for a stronger comeback,” the statement added.
For employees, the shutdown may mark the end of an era, but Harmony Holdings has assured them of a dignified exit.
“All entitlements are currently being processed, and those who wish to return once operations resume are welcome to reapply. We deeply appreciate their contributions to the company’s history,” the statement said.
The state government is optimistic about the potential impact of these changes.
“Our goal is to relaunch Harmony Transport as a modernized, efficient, and resilient public service provider that every Kwaran can be proud of,” the statement concluded.
