I Choose not To Be Happy Always – CKAY

Nigerian popular Afrobeats singer, Chukwuka Ekweani, aka CKAY has shared insightful reflections on his smile and emotional authenticity as he gears up for his highly anticipated album release. In a recent Afrobeats Intelligence podcast by Joey Akan, the artist addressed perceptions surrounding his tendency to keep a more serious demeanor, revealing that he often hears fans express that he should smile more.

Acknowledging the power of imagery, Ekweani noted his recent talk of his smiles.
He said, “A recurrent review of my smile is that I have a nice smile and I should smile more.”
The artist explained that the perception of his vibe often comes from his social media presence, where fans primarily see him in photos rather than in real life.

“Maybe they build a perception of me needing to smile more because of pictures,” he added.

However, despite this feedback, CKAY clarified that his artistic journey does not revolve around constant happiness, stating that he never smiled through his work on his album, underscoring the emotional depth of his music.

He said “I wasn’t smiling when I started working on this album; the mood was reality. Making music only about the positive things, it won’t be realistic. For someone like me, making art has to represent the positives and negatives for it to be authentic”

As CKAY prepares to unveil his next project, he invites fans to embrace both the light and shadows of life, promising a body of work that reflects genuine human emotions.

His honesty and thoughtfulness serve as a reminder that true artistry lies in the ability to convey a full spectrum of feelings, resonating deeply with audiences everywhere.
