The Labour Party’s presidential candidate in Nigeria’s 2023 election, Peter Obi, recently stirred social media with his steadfast stance on marriage and loyalty, saying he would never consider divorcing his wife, Margaret Brownson, even in the face of infidelity.
Speaking on The Honest Bunch podcast, hosted by popular comedian and actor Chinedu Ani Emmanuel, also known as Nedu Wazobia, Obi expressed his unwavering commitment to his wife, emphasizing that nothing could break their bond.
“No matter what my wife does today, I won’t divorce her. I can’t separate from her. I can never. Even if she likes, let her shoot me as long as I am alive; she’s my wife,” Obi declared with conviction.
Addressing the issue of infidelity, he said, “No matter what she does, I won’t marry someone else. She’s my wife. Whatever she likes, let her do it because what is she going to do that would offend me? What? Maybe have an extramarital affair? It’s her business. It’s not me. They won’t say two of us have an affair. They would say Peter Obi is a very good man who married a woman who is [promiscuous]. That’s it!”
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, explained that he values the independence of each family member, noting that their lifestyles don’t need to be identical.
“You can’t quantify me with the life of my wife or children. No. We have different lifestyles. Even if I’m traveling with my wife, people have seen it. Sometimes we are on the same plane but in different classes. She’s in business class, and I’m in economy, because that suits her, and it doesn’t conflict with my interests.”
Obi’s remarks have sparked widespread conversation on social media, with many Nigerians reflecting on his perspectives on loyalty, marriage, and forgiveness. Some praised his unwavering stance, while others debated his views on marriage dynamics.
One commenter wrote, “Peter Obi is showing us that marriage is a lifetime commitment; it’s refreshing to hear a public figure speak this way.”
Another chimed in, “This is a bold statement on marriage, but does it hold in every situation? Nigerians will surely have diverse opinions on this.”
For Peter Obi, however, loyalty is non-negotiable, and as he made clear, “Marriage is not something I take lightly. It’s a commitment through thick and thin.”
