Research Key to National Development, Says UI Deputy VC

Professor Peter O. Olapegba, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Administration at the University of Ibadan, has emphasized the crucial role of research in driving national development.

Speaking on behalf of Vice-Chancellor Professor Kayode O. Adebowale during a visit from the University of Ibadan Research and Development Fair Committee, he urged researchers to focus on innovative solutions that address local and national challenges.

Professor Olapegba highlighted the importance of fostering research capacity through collaboration among scholars from various tertiary institutions.

He commended the Committee members for their dedication and hard work in fulfilling their mandate.

He encouraged the UI Research and Development (RESDEV) Committee to utilize media outlets and blogs to showcase the university’s services and research outcomes.

Additionally, he recommended inviting companies and industries to the upcoming research fair to secure sponsorship and support for the university.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor also suggested that the prizes for awards of excellence be made more attractive to motivate faculties to enhance their research efforts.

Professor A. O. Fadoju, Chairman of the Research and Development Fair Committee, expressed gratitude to the university management for their support and the opportunity to serve.

He explained that the Committee’s goal is to promote research activities and strengthen the connection between the university and the community.

At the 2023 UI RESDEV Fair, several faculties were recognized for their outstanding performance and awarded cash prizes:

Art & Humanities Category:

  • 1st: Institute of African Studies (₦250,000)
  • 2nd: Multidisciplinary Studies (₦200,000)
  • 3rd: UI School of Business (₦150,000)

Science Category:

  • 1st: Faculty of Environmental Design and Management (₦250,000)
  • 2nd: Faculty of Technology (₦200,000)
  • 3rd: Faculty of Science (₦150,000)

The UI RESDEV Fair is held annually in collaboration with the DAWN Commission, and the Committee is seeking further partnerships with TETFUND.

Professor Fadoju reaffirmed the Committee’s commitment to advancing knowledge through rigorous research and addressing global challenges with education-driven solutions.

The theme for the 2024 UI RESDEV Fair and Development Agenda for the DAWN Commission will be “Re-Focusing Research and Innovation Towards Scaling-Up Nigerian Brands for Commercial Value.”
