The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has thrown its support behind the Ogun State Government’s move to crack down on illegal motor parks across the state.
Recall that the Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, on Monday announced that the crackdown would begin immediately.
He criticized these illegal garages for exploiting commuters and drivers through excessive fees and unauthorized levies, especially at a time when the government is focused on reducing transportation costs.
The decision follows recent actions by the Ogun State Taskforce on Environmental Compliance and Enforcement, led by Alhaji Farook Akintunde.
The taskforce recently shut down two illegal garages at NNPC Junction and near the June 12 Cultural Centre in Abeokuta, citing concerns over environmental nuisances.
Governor Abiodun praised the taskforce and announced that the operation would be extended statewide, with a particular focus on areas like Mowe-Ibafo and Sango-Ota.
He highlighted the security risks posed by these unauthorized garages, which often serve as hideouts for criminal activities.
“As a responsible government, we cannot allow these operators to endanger our citizens,” Abiodun declared, urging residents to avoid illegal garages and choose government-approved transport options, including CNG buses, for safer and more affordable travel.
In an interview with NATIONAL TELESCOPE, Ogun NURTW State Chairman Alhaji Mustapha Ismail (also known as Yaro Ade) commended the governor’s decision, stating that illegal motor parks serve as hideouts for criminal elements.
“It is a commendable initiative by Mr. Governor, and we are fully in support of it. Many of these illegal motor parks harbor criminals, and with this action by the state government, we can further rid the state of these threats,” Ismail said.
He added, “We are committed to supporting the government by ensuring that illegal motor parks are eliminated. Our constitution permits us to sanction anyone who establishes these unapproved parks.”
