The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced the dualization of the 1,068-kilometer Sokoto-Badagry road, starting from Illela town in Sokoto State.
This major project will traverse seven states: Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Oyo, Ogun, and Lagos, and has been awarded to Hitech Construction Company Limited.
President Bola Tinubu, represented by Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu, expressed the importance of this project on Thursday.
The governor praised Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, for his dedication to bringing this vision to life. He assured that adequate security will be provided for the construction teams to ensure timely completion.
Governor Aliyu also thanked the president for ongoing support to the state, including distribution of fertilizers and food palliatives.
He noted the significance of the additional ministerial slot given to Sokoto, reflecting the president’s commitment to the state.
In his remarks, Minister David Umahi highlighted that the Sokoto-Badagry road is part of the administration’s plan for over 3,000 kilometers of road projects.
He pointed out that this road was first proposed by President Shehu Shagari nearly 48 years ago and will feature six lanes to reduce traffic congestion.
Umahi assured that the project will incorporate modern technologies, including solar-powered streetlights and CCTV cameras, setting a new standard for infrastructure in Nigeria.
The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Abubakar, commended the government for the initiative but urged that citizens’ welfare should also be prioritized. He called for swift action on the Sokoto-Zaria road and advocated for railway transportation from Sokoto to Lagos, emphasizing the need for improved connectivity.
Minister of Budget and National Planning, Atiku Bagudu, described the day as significant for national development, reiterating the government’s commitment to infrastructure improvement.
Senator Adamu Aliero, representing Kebbi Central, echoed the sentiments regarding the road’s potential to transform travel and boost the economy.
He urged the president to consider railway construction to further enhance transportation links.
The road project is seen as a pivotal move to enhance economic development and connectivity across the states involved, with promises of job creation and improved travel efficiency.
