Ex-Rep Member, Lawan Released After Five Years In Kuje Prison

Former House of Representatives member Farouk Lawan has been released from Kuje prison after completing a five-year sentence.

Lawan, who represented the Bagwai/Shanono constituency of Kano state, was convicted in 2021 for soliciting and accepting a $500,000 bribe from businessman Femi Otedola, Chairman of Zenon Petroleum and Gas Ltd.

Lawan, who chaired the House of Representatives Ad Hoc Committee on Fuel Subsidy probe, expressed gratitude upon regaining his freedom. In a statement, he thanked God, his family, and associates for their support during his time in custody.

Confirming his release, Adamu Duza, spokesperson of the Federal Capital Territory Command of the Nigeria Correctional Service, stated, “Yes, he has been released having served his sentence.”
