Residents of Kusaki community in the Gaube ward of Kuje Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory are currently stranded due to the collapse of a bridge in the area.
The destruction is said to have occurred prior to severe flooding caused by the recent heavy rainfall.
Speaking with a local resident, Bissalla Ibrahim, told our correspondent on Saturday that the incident unfolded couple of weeks, denying farmers access to their farms and villages connecting with each other.
He said, “This is over two weeks ago, when the only bridge that connects Kusaki and some neighbouring villages collapsed and since then, residents, especially farmers, have been finding it difficult to access their farms.’’
Ibrahim added that, the locals had to construct temporary wooden bridge to enable residents and farmers to cross to their farms, resulting in engaging women to carry farm produce through to where vehicle will take them to Kuje Market.
Meanwhile, in an interaction with a community leader, Samson Iliya, said the bridge collapsed a week ago, and since then, residents had been facing untold hardship.
Iliya urged the council leadership of Abdullahi Suleiman Sabo to assist the community by rebuilding the bridge.
However, a representative from the council’s works department, who requested to remain unnamed, informed our reporter that the council is already aware of the situation regarding the bridge.
He mentioned that the council chairman has been informed and will be taking action soon.
