Dangote Refinery Fails to Meet 1.065b litres Petrol Supply

Controversy is brewing over the supply of petrol from Dangote Refinery to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

Recent documents indicate that the refinery was unable to fulfill NNPCL’s request for 1.065 billion litres between September 15 and October 20, supplying only 317 million litres during this period.

In September, Dangote Refinery provided 103 million litres, which accounts for just 26% of the requested amount. This dropped to 214 million litres in October, or 32% of the expected supply.

Initially, NNPCL was the sole off-taker for petrol from the refinery, purchasing it at N898 per litre.

However, following a new policy allowing other marketers to buy directly from the refinery, NNPCL later stated that the purchase price increased to N977 per litre, a claim the refinery has contested.

In related news, Dangote Refinery clarified that there are no new court cases involving the NNPCL.

According to Anthony Chiejina, the Group Chief Branding and Communications Officer, discussions are ongoing regarding the naira-for-crude policy, and the refinery intends to withdraw any pending court cases in January 2025.

The refinery previously sought a court order to void import licenses issued to NNPCL and others, claiming these licenses violated the Petroleum Industry Act by undermining local production.

Dangote also demanded N100 billion in damages, citing concerns that such licenses threaten its investments in domestic refining.

As the situation develops, both parties aim to resolve their issues amicably in light of the new governmental directives.
