The Nigerian Army has dismissed rumors regarding the death of Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Taoreed Lagbaja, which circulated widely on social media over the weekend.
A post from a Nigerian journalist claimed Lagbaja had died from cancer 48 hours prior.
In response, the Army stated that these claims are false, confirming that while the COAS is critically ill, he is not deceased.
Sources from Army Headquarters clarified that he is currently receiving medical treatment abroad.
One insider urged the public to refrain from spreading misinformation and to pray for the Army chief’s recovery.
As the situation unfolded, the Army also announced the retirement of 15 Generals from the Artillery Corps, comprising 11 Major Generals and four Brigadier Generals.
This retirement ceremony took place at the Nigerian Army School of Artillery in Kaduna State.
During the event, Maj Gen James Myam (retd) reflected on their careers, expressing gratitude for the support they received and acknowledging the leadership of Lt Gen Lagbaja.
He emphasized the importance of loyalty to the constitution and urged serving officers to remain vigilant.
The ceremony was attended by several senior military officials, including former Chief of Army Staff, Maj Gen Alwali Kazir (retd).
