Three dismissed officers of the Kwara State Police Command have been remanded in prison custody by a Magistrates’ Court in Ilorin for their alleged involvement in the death of a student from the Kwara State Polytechnic.
The accused, Mr. Abiodun Kayode, Mr. James Emmanuel, and Mr. Oni Philip, were arraigned before Magistrate Felicia Sha’ba on Wednesday, October 16, 2024. They face charges of criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide, as outlined in Sections 97 and 221 of the Penal Code Law, in connection with the death of Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola, a National Diploma student of Electronic Engineering.
The tragic incident occurred on September 4, 2024, along Afolabi Olaleye Street, off Old-Jebba Road by Kayowa Filling Station in Ilorin.
According to the First Information Report (FIR) presented by Police Prosecutor Olajide Emmanuel, the Commissioner of Police, Victor Olaiya, ordered a discreet investigation after a distress call was received on September 5, 2024, around 5:00 PM. The report revealed that the deceased was found lying in a pool of blood and had informed a family member before dying that a policeman had attacked him.
“He was quickly rushed to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital for medical treatment, but was later confirmed dead by the medical doctor on duty,” the prosecutor stated.
Further investigation led to the arrest of the three officers, who were found to have abandoned their duty post at Fate Roundabout to confront the student, eventually stabbing him and leaving him to die. One of the accused, Oni Philip, confessed to chasing the victim on the orders of his colleagues, Abiodun Kayode and James Emmanuel.
“Discreet investigation further revealed that the three dismissed officers conspired and caused the death of Abdulyekeen Abdulqoyyum when they pursued him, stabbed him, and left him in his pool of blood,” the FIR stated.
