Police Re-arrest Escaped Convict in Borno Flood Incident

The Borno State Police Command has successfully re-arrested a convict, Auwalu Aminu, also known as Auwalu Kirkir, who escaped from a correctional facility in Maiduguri after severe flooding caused significant damage in September.

In a statement released on Wednesday, ASP Nahum Daso, the Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the development.

According to him, the 24-year-old convict had been serving time for criminal conspiracy and theft at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Maiduguri. Aminu managed to escape when the facility’s fence collapsed due to the floods.

ASP Daso explained, “During the flood incident in September 2024, the fence of the correctional facility gave way, allowing several inmates, including Auwalu Aminu, to flee.”

The police acted swiftly upon receiving information that Aminu had been sighted in Banki town, leading to his re-arrest on October 16, 2024.

“The officers from Bama Area Command/Banki Divisional Headquarters moved promptly on credible intelligence and successfully re-arrested the fugitive. Aminu will now be handed back to the Nigeria Correctional Service for further action,” Daso added.

Earlier reports had revealed that over 281 inmates escaped from the Maiduguri Medium Security Custodial Centre when the flooding submerged parts of the city.

With Aminu’s re-arrest, the police have now apprehended three escapees, including Abubakar Mohammed and Kyari Kur, who were captured shortly after the September 10 flood.

This re-arrest highlights the ongoing efforts by security forces to track down the remaining fugitives from the flood-induced jailbreak.
