Red Cross to Raise N2.5bn to Tackle Hunger in Nigeria

The Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) has announced a bold initiative to raise N2.5 billion aimed at addressing the escalating hunger crisis and malnutrition in Nigeria.

This announcement was made by Chima Nwankwo, the Coordinator for Communications and Advocacy, in a statement shared with NATIONAL TELESCOPE.

Recent reports indicate that without immediate intervention, over 31.5 million Nigerians could face food insecurity between January and October 2024.

Contributing factors include ongoing conflicts, rising inflation, and economic hardships. Market analysis predicts that by October 2024, the prices of staple foods, such as grains, could triple.

The Famine Early Warning System has highlighted a troubling 70% increase in cases of Severe Acute Malnutrition among children since September 2023. This has underscored the urgent need for increased support from individuals and organizations.

With assistance from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the NRCS has launched an Emergency Appeal aimed at supporting Nigeria’s most vulnerable populations over the next 18 months. The fundraising efforts will focus on improving livelihoods, health, nutrition, and WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) services in the hardest-hit areas. The combination of persistent conflict, economic instability, and soaring food prices threatens to exacerbate food insecurity and malnutrition into 2024.

To kick off this critical campaign, the NRCS is hosting its first Annual Fundraising Gala Night on Saturday, September 28, 2024, at 6:00 PM at the Civic Centre in Victoria Island, Lagos.

Themed “Keeping Humanity Alive,” the event aims to raise N2.5 billion for the Hunger Crisis Appeal and WASH programs throughout Nigeria.

The gala is expected to attract around 200 attendees from various sectors, including business, civil society, politics, entertainment, and media. Guests will have opportunities to participate in a tombola and make pledges through donation cards.

Prince Oluyemisi Adeaga, President of the NRCS, expressed excitement about the event, stating, “We are thrilled to gather leaders and influencers for a night dedicated to making a meaningful impact.

The funds raised will directly support our ongoing efforts to alleviate hunger and improve water and sanitation conditions for vulnerable communities.”

Corporate sponsors from the financial, insurance, food and beverage, telecommunications, and hospitality sectors, including Guaranty Trust Holding Company PLC, have been invited to participate.

They will ensure that all proceeds from the gala go directly to the Hunger Crisis Appeal and WASH rehabilitation projects, significantly impacting those in need.

The NRCS calls on partners and the public to join this noble cause. Individuals or organizations wishing to contribute can do so at: https://www.redcrossnigeria.org/nigeria-hunger-crisis-appeal. Your support will play a crucial role in bolstering the resilience of communities facing severe challenges across Nigeria.

Established by Nigeria’s Parliament in 1960 and recognized by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in 1961, the NRCS has been a cornerstone of humanitarian response in the country.

With a robust network of volunteers, the NRCS provides essential services such as disaster relief, health education, and emergency response.

As Nigeria continues to grapple with food insecurity driven by economic and conflict-related challenges, this gala represents a vital platform to mobilize support for those in urgent need.
