Kwara LG Elections: Police Restrict Movement as Lack of Materials mar Poll

By Alimi Micheal, KWARA|

All is set for the much-anticipated Kwara State local government elections, with security measures firmly in place.

The police have implemented a restriction of movement on major roads across the state to ensure a smooth and peaceful electoral process.

Voters are expected to elect their representatives at the local government level in what is seen as a pivotal moment for grassroots democracy in the state.

However, despite the heightened security, there has been a major setback in the distribution of essential election materials.

As of 9 a.m. this morning, several polling units reported that no election instruments, such as ballot boxes, voting slips, and ink pads, had been delivered.

Election officials at various locations expressed frustration over the unavailability of these crucial materials, raising concerns that the delay could affect the timeliness and transparency of the election process.

One election officer, who preferred to remain anonymous, stated, “We have been waiting since 7 a.m., but no materials have arrived yet. We are ready to work, but without the necessary tools, we can’t proceed.”

This delay has left many voters stranded at polling units as they await further updates from the Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission (KWSIEC).

Meanwhile, the police, in collaboration with other security agencies, have maintained their heavy presence in strategic areas to prevent any form of violence or disruptions.

The Inspector General of Police in Kwara State, in a press briefing, emphasized that the restriction of movement would remain in place until the close of polls to ensure that the election is conducted peacefully.

The Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission is yet to issue an official statement on the delays, leaving citizens and election observers eager for further clarification.

Despite the setback, optimism remains high that the materials will soon be made available and the elections will proceed without further hitches.

This local government election is being closely monitored as it serves as a litmus test for upcoming national elections, with the state’s political landscape hanging in the balance.

More update soon…
