A tragic road accident at Oyeagu Market, Abagana, in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, has claimed the life of a young girl and left six others injured, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
The Acting Sector Public Education Officer of the Anambra State Command, Margaret Onabe, revealed that the incident involved a TRACAS Sienna bus with registration number NEN 588 YX, driven by one Mr. Eze Uchechukwu.
She explained that the accident was caused by brake failure, leading the bus to lose control and crash into the market.
“The crash happened when the driver lost control due to brake failure, resulting in the vehicle ramming into the market and causing the unfortunate death of a young girl. Six others sustained varying degrees of injury,” said Onabe.
The FRSC rescue team from RS5.3 Nteje was quick to respond, but by the time they arrived, the injured had already been rushed to Urban Hospital and Maternity for urgent medical care, while the body of the deceased was taken to the morgue.
The bus was subsequently impounded by the Oyiagu Division.
The Sector Commander for Anambra State, Corps Commander Joyce Nnennaya Alexander, expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of life and extended her condolences to the bereaved family.
She also visited the hospital to check on the injured victims and wished them a swift recovery.
Speaking further, Commander Alexander cautioned drivers to ensure their vehicles are in proper working condition before hitting the road.
“We cannot overemphasize the importance of regular vehicle maintenance. Motorists must service their vehicles to avoid preventable accidents like this,” she stated.
In addition, she urged market women to refrain from displaying their goods on the roadside, warning that such practices pose a significant danger to both traders and road users.
“Selling by the roadside puts lives at risk, as seen in this unfortunate incident,” she concluded.
