Ondo Police Arrest Three Herders Over Farmer’s Death

The Ondo State Police Command has arrested three herders in connection with the murder of 36-year-old farmer, Sunday Ayeni, following a dispute over compensation for damages caused by grazing on his farm.

The suspects, identified as Abdullah Halilu Tumbi, 59; Mohamodu Adamu Bonkolo, 50; and Shagari Muhammed, 45, allegedly stabbed Ayeni while he was working on his farm at Afiri Camp, near Oka-Akoko in the Akoko South-West Local Government Area of Ondo State.

Speaking at an Akure Chief Magistrate Court, Police Prosecutor Folashade Adeyemi stated, “The defendants, in conjunction with others still at large, are accused of conspiring to murder Sunday Ayeni by stabbing him with a cutlass on his stomach while he was on his farm. This tragic incident occurred on August 10, 2024.”

According to the charges read in court, “You, Abdullah Halilu Tumbi, Mohamodu Adamu Bonkolo, and Shagari Muhammed, along with others at large, did stab one Ayeni Sunday during a clash on his farm with a sharp cutlass, which led to his death.”

Adeyemi explained that the offense contravenes Sections 316, 319, and 324 of the Criminal Code Law of Ondo State, 2006. She urged the court to remand the suspects at a correctional facility pending further legal advice from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The presiding magistrate, A. Akinboboye, did not take the pleas of the defendants. He ordered their remand at the Olokuta Correctional Centre in Akure, pending the DPP’s advice. Magistrate Akinboboye also directed that the case file be duplicated and sent to the DPP’s office, adjourning the case until December for further mention.

The Ondo State Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring justice is served, urging the public to remain calm and cooperate with ongoing investigations.
