Waheed Ayilara, the Commissioner of Police for Akwa Ibom State, has passed away.
Ayilara died in the early hours of Thursday at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, as reported by The Nation.
According to sources close to the family, he underwent surgery for prostate cancer on Wednesday and died a few hours later.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our friend, brother, and family member, Waheed Ayilara, the Commissioner of Police for Akwa Ibom State,” a statement from the family said.
A senior police officer in Akwa Ibom State, who spoke on the condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to comment publicly, confirmed Ayilara’s death.
Attempts to verify the information from the Public Relations Officer of the Lagos State Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin, were unsuccessful, as calls to his line were not answered on Thursday morning.
Ayilara was appointed acting Commissioner of Police in Lagos in November 2023, while he was serving as Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP). Before his appointment in Akwa Ibom, he was the DCP in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department.
In February 2024, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, appointed him to lead the Akwa Ibom State Command.
