As part of ongoing efforts to mitigate the economic hardships affecting vulnerable Nigerians, particularly in rural Itsekiri communities, the UK-based socio-cultural group, Ugbajo-Itsekiri has donated food items worth millions of naira.
This initiative coincides with the third coronation anniversary of the Olu of Warri, His Majesty Ogiame Atuwatse III, CFR.
The relief items, which included bags of rice, beans, garri, salt, gallons of vegetable oil, and cartons of noodles, were distributed to residents in the Egbokodo, Ifiekporo, and Aja-Etan communities of Warri South Local Government Area in Delta State.
Speaking to journalists after the distribution on Tuesday evening, the President of Ugbajo-Itsekiri, Mr. Mejebi Eyewuoma, highlighted that the group chose to honour the Olu’s anniversary by providing palliatives to their kinsmen in rural areas, aiming to alleviate the harsh economic conditions currently faced by many.
Eyewuoma, accompanied by other prominent members such as Prince Julius Temisanren, former President of Ugbajo-Itsekiri UK, and Barr. Dede Ukuti, President of Itsekiri Congress UK, explained, “In the spirit of coronation joy, we join His Majesty, Ogiame Atuwatse III, CFR, in celebration.
“This year, our celebration extends to sharing food items like rice, garri, beans, and palm oil with our community members.”
He continued, “We believe that the most fitting way to honour His Majesty is by supporting those in our communities. The economic situation in Nigeria is challenging, especially in rural areas. However, we are here to celebrate with His Majesty, who has created an environment that promotes community support.”
The President also called for increased assistance to the communities and urged residents to unite in backing the Olu of Warri’s efforts to build and develop their areas.
During the visit to the Egbokodo community, the team was warmly received by the Olare-Aja (Traditional Head) of the community, Chief Atiwa Amanoritsewor, along with other local leaders.
In Ifiekporo, an enthusiastic crowd, including community representatives, Mr. Tony Jackson and Madam Ogbe Okudani, welcomed the UK team. Mr. Jackson expressed gratitude, stating that “the support came at the right time.”
