Nigeria’s Problem is Self-Centered Leadership, Says Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has identified poor leadership as Nigeria’s biggest challenge, blaming self-centered leaders lacking knowledge and a sense of service for the country’s woes.

Speaking in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Saturday at the 2024 Leadership Empowerment International Conference, Obasanjo stressed that if Nigeria could get leadership right at all levels, other issues would naturally resolve themselves.

The former president said, “Leadership is the bane of Nigeria today. We have leadership that is self-centered, lacks understanding, and fails to see service as the core of leadership. If we can get leadership right, we will get everything else right.”

Obasanjo urged Nigerians to embrace and promote responsible and transformational leadership at every level to achieve good governance and national progress.

The event, organized by the South Africa-based Immanuel Theology Institute International in partnership with the Priesthood Leadership Development Initiative Inc. (PLDI), honored 20 prominent Nigerians, including former Ogun State commissioners Engr. Anthony Ojeshina and Hon. Dele Obadina.

Prof. Olusesi Obateye, International Coordinator of PLDI, lamented the lack of responsible leadership in Nigeria, attributing it to the country’s underdevelopment nearly 64 years after independence.
