KADIRS Closes Kaduna Electric Over Unpaid N600m Taxes

By Lami Victor KADUNA

The Kaduna State Internal Revenue Service (KADIRS) has shut down the offices of the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KAEDCO) due to an unpaid tax bill totaling N600 million.

KADIRS Executive Chairman, Jerry Adams, informed journalists on Friday morning that the action was carried out under a court order to recover the outstanding tax debt owed by KAEDCO.

Adams explained that the tax liability, which dates back to 2015, had been reconciled with KAEDCO.

The company had agreed to pay a significant portion of the debt last year, but has since failed to fulfill its commitment.

Adams stated, “We are empowered by law to seal and take over their premises to ensure compliance, and that is what we have done today.”

He noted that the closure was a necessary step to enforce tax laws and ensure accountability.

The executive chairman also used the opportunity to call on other businesses, individuals, and organisations to voluntarily comply with tax regulations to avoid similar actions.

He stressed the importance of timely tax payments for the development and maintenance of public services in the state.

The closure of KAEDCO’s premises is expected to impact electricity distribution in the region.

However, KADIRS remains firm in its stance that the enforcement of tax laws is crucial for the state’s financial stability.

KADIRS reiterated that it will continue to pursue outstanding tax debts to ensure that all entities fulfill their financial responsibilities
