On Thursday, August 1st, Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, witnessed a relatively calm atmosphere despite the anticipated ten-day protest against hunger and economic hardships.
By midday, our correspondent observed that many businesses remained closed, and there were few commercial vehicles, including motorcycles and tricycles (Keke), on the roads.
Security forces, including military personnel, were deployed along major routes such as Airport Road and the Post Office area, maintaining order without interfering with residents.
The designated protest site, Metropolitan Square along Asa-Dam/Offa Garage Road, was heavily guarded by the Nigerian Police Force and other security agencies from early morning.
Initially, only a single protester, Dr. AbdulMumin Yinka Ajia, was present at the venue. He expressed solidarity with those protesting poor governance and criticised the disparity between the wealth of the ruling class and the struggles of ordinary Nigerians.
Later, a small group identifying themselves as “Take-It-Back” arrived and staged a peaceful demonstration.
Their spokesperson, Buhari Olanrewaju, raised concerns about poor governance, hunger, insecurity, and currency devaluation.
The group also demanded an increase in the minimum wage to N250,000, improved access to justice, and the release of Nnamdi Kanu following a Supreme Court ruling.
Issa Muttalib, another member of the group, voiced frustration over the persistent poverty and unfulfilled governmental promises.
He called for a reduction in the cost of governance and a more accountable administration.
By 11:50 am, the group dispersed peacefully, while a significant security presence remained to ensure the situation stayed under control.
