Delta Monarchs Call for Calm, Dialogue Over Planned Protests

The Traditional Rulers Council of Delta State has called for peace and urged all Deltans, particularly the youth, to reconsider participating in the proposed nationwide mass protest against hunger and poor governance.

The council noted the importance of maintaining peace and allowing government time to address the nation’s challenges.

In a press statement jointly signed by the council’s Chairman, HRM Major General Felix Mujakpero (Rtd), Orhue 1, Orodje of Okpe Kingdom; 1st Vice Chairman, HRM Pere S.P Luke Kalanama VIII, JP, Pere of Akugbene Mein Kingdom; and 2nd Vice Chairman, HRM Obi (Dr) Henry Kikachukwu, JP, Obi of Ubulu-Unor, the traditional rulers acknowledged the constitutional right of citizens to peacefully protest for good governance.

However, they also expressed concern over recent events in other African countries, such as Kenya and Zimbabwe, which have experienced upheaval.

The statement read: “We are acutely aware of the constitutional right of every citizen to peacefully protest for good governance when necessary.

“However, recent disturbances in our region, particularly in Kenya and Zimbabwe, compel us to appeal passionately to the good conscience of all Deltans and the entire nation.”

The monarchs recognised the severe economic challenges facing Nigeria, including hunger, unemployment, and widespread insecurity.

They urged the public to remain calm and allow President Bola Tinubu and state executives time to address these issues and foster sustainable economic growth.

“We also call on the organisers of the proposed mass protest to engage in dialogue with the country’s leadership for the overall benefit of the nation,” the statement added.

The traditional rulers stressed that dialogue and cooperation are essential for resolving the country’s pressing issues and ensuring long-term stability and prosperity.
