Police, Vigilante Foil Kidnap Attempt in Ilorin Community

In the early hours of July 24, 2024, the Kwara State Police Command, in partnership with the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN), successfully thwarted an attempted kidnapping in Oluwalose community, Ilorin-West Local Government Area.

This, according to a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, of the Kwara Command, DSP Toun Ejire-Adeyemi and made available to newsmen in Ilorin Kwara State.

“A distress call was received at about 1:30 am from the residents along the Okolowo-Jebba Highway, alerted authorities of an invasion by armed assailants.

A patrol team from the Oloje Division, accompanied by VGN members, was promptly dispatched to the scene.

The security team encountered nine heavily armed individuals, equipped with AK-47 rifles and Dane-guns, who were attempting to abduct guests at the prayer camp of Alfa Bukhari Jamiu Tunde.

However, the swift response from the police and VGN, the kidnapping attempt was successfully thwarted, and no individuals were taken.

Despite the thwarted kidnapping, a man and his wife from Lagos, who had come to attend the prayer camp, sustained injuries from the assailants.
They were quickly transported to a hospital, treated for their injuries, and have since been discharged.

Following the incident, the Kwara State Police Command noted that it has intensified security measures in the area, while additional patrol teams have been deployed to conduct a comprehensive search for the assailants.

Authorities have assured the public that the situation is under control and that an ongoing investigation aims to apprehend those responsible for the attack.

Commissioner of Police Victor Olaiya praised the prompt and courageous actions of the patrol team and VGN members.

He highlighted that their quick response was crucial in preventing what could have been a tragic outcome.

The Kwara State Police Command has reiterated its commitment to protecting the lives and properties of residents.

It has also urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station to help ensure community safety.

The collaborative efforts of the police and vigilante groups reflect a strong commitment to maintaining peace and security in the region.
