In support of Governor Umo Eno’s ARISE agenda and its agricultural revolution, the Transition Chairman of Oruk Anam Local Government Area, Mr. Kingsley Frank, has empowered 160 women with a total of eight million Naira under the “Back-to-Farm” grant.

This initiative is aimed at encouraging women to return to their farms. The beneficiaries, ten from each of the 16 wards in Oruk Anam, received 50,000 Naira each.

The agribusiness empowerment programme, held at the Council Secretariat in Ikot Ibritam, also provided support to women in tailoring and hairdressing businesses.

The event featured Pastor Patience Umo Eno, Wife of the Akwa Ibom State Governor, as the Special Guest.

Mr. Frank reiterated his commitment to the Governor’s ARISE Agenda, focusing on agricultural revolution, rural development, infrastructure maintenance, security management, educational advancement, and executing one project per ward.

He promised further initiatives to support these goals.

The programme included the distribution of sewing machines, hairdressing kits, and wrappers to selected beneficiaries.

Pastor Eno, represented by Ms. Ofonime Essien, Personal Aide to the Governor, praised Mr. Frank and his wife, Affiong, for their thoughtful initiative, which aligns with her pet project, the Golden Initiative For All (GIFA).

She emphasised the significant role of women in food security, especially in times of scarcity.

“Empowering women in agriculture and improving their access to education, technology, and markets will not only enhance their own livelihoods but also contribute to increasing food production and security at a global level,” said the Governor’s wife.

She encouraged the beneficiaries to invest the grants and tools wisely to grow their businesses.

Mrs. Affiong Frank, wife of the Transition Chairman, highlighted that 60 to 80 percent of food consumed in Nigeria is produced by women.

She urged the beneficiaries to use the funds to support the women empowerment component of GIFA, ensuring food sufficiency and security.

The event’s highlight was the presentation of empowerment cash and tools, including professional hair dryers, curling tongs, wrappers, palm fruit seedlings, sewing machines, and other accessories.

A four-man panel discussion on the “Role of Women in Food Security” featured contributions from Mrs. Uduak Ekong, Press Secretary to the Governor’s wife, and Mrs. Emem Sampson Idiong, wife of the Deputy Chief Whip of AKHA.

They encouraged women to return to farming to ensure food security in the state.

Lady Ime Kierian, Wife of the Honourary Special Advisor to the Governor, delivered a goodwill message, thanking Pastor Patience Eno for her support to the women of Oruk Anam and applauding Mr. Frank for his efforts in empowering women across the 16 wards.

Mrs. Inamke Friday, Women Leader of Oruk Anam Ward 2, expressed gratitude on behalf of the beneficiaries, appreciating the Transition Chairman and his wife for equipping them with tools and cash to enhance their economic status.
