The Nigerian Police Federal Capital Territory Command has apprehended Hashiru Baku, a notorious prison escapee and the alleged mastermind behind the murder of Brigadier General Harold Udokwere.

The deceased, who was the National Chairman of the Retired Members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, was murdered by armed robbers who invaded his Abuja residence on June 22, 2024, and stole his gun.

During a press briefing at the police command in Abuja, FCT Commissioner of Police, Bennett Igweh, announced that the suspect, a fugitive from Kuje Prison, was captured in Kano State on July 17 while attempting to flee the country.

Igweh revealed that police operatives tracked the suspect to Chile Hotel in Kano State, where he was perfecting his plans to escape.

“We have recovered the general’s wristwatch and his wife’s jewelry, which were stolen from his house. Additionally, we have also recovered the general’s gun that was taken with him,” Igweh stated.

He noted that Hashiru Marazu Bako was previously arrested in 2022 at Wuse Zone 6 for armed robbery, prosecuted, and sentenced to Kuje correctional facility. Bako broke out during the Kuje jailbreak on May 22, 2022.

“Instead of him to repent, he continued with more audacity. We arrested him in Kano where he was trying to exit the country,” Igweh added.
