Persons with disabilities in Delta State have praised the state government for providing grants to support their businesses and medical needs.
The commendation came during a Funds Presentation Ceremony held at the headquarters of the State Ministry of Women Affairs, Community, and Social Development in Asaba, the state capital.
Anthony Owasa, a physically challenged tailor, who received a grant of one hundred thousand naira, shared his gratitude and the story behind his application.
“I applied to the government to support me,” he said.
“Today, the government has supported me to support myself.”
He noted that the grant will enable him to procure a sewing machine, crucial for his business.
Similarly, Mrs. Okonji Goodnews received a grant of five hundred thousand naira on behalf of Benjamin Nzemeke, who suffered multiple accidents that severely damaged both of his hands.
She expressed her hope that this assistance would lead to further support for Nzemeke’s medical needs.
“We pray that having received this, others who I presented his case to will come up with something so we can take him back to the hospital,” she stated.
Other beneficiaries at the event received grants ranging from fifty thousand naira to five hundred thousand naira, depending on the nature of their requests for assistance from the Delta State Government.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Pat Ajudua, represented by the Permanent Secretary Mrs. Oghenekevwe Agas, highlighted that the grants for livelihood, medical, and educational support are part of the government’s Meaningful Development for All policy.
She explained, “The requests are for educational support, some for livelihood, but in all, it is to the betterment of society, which aligns with the M.O.R.E. Agenda of His Excellency the Governor of Delta State.”
Mrs. Ajudua also commended the resilience of persons living with disabilities for their determination to contribute to society despite their challenges.
The initiative underscores the state government’s commitment to inclusivity and support for all residents, particularly those facing physical challenges.
