Sultan of Sokoto Predicts Prolonged Battle Against Banditry in North-West

The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Saad Abubakar III, has cautioned that the North-West region of Nigeria faces a long and arduous battle against banditry, predicting it may take decades to overcome this threat.

At the North-West Peace and Security Summit in Katsina State, the Sultan highlighted the critical need for collective action.

He urged traditional rulers, security agencies, and governors to collaborate closely in addressing the escalating crisis, stressing that a unified approach is essential for meaningful progress.

The Sultan recognised the devastating impact of banditry and insurgency on the region, which has displaced thousands and severely affected food production.

These disruptions not only cause immediate hardship but also threaten the region’s long-term stability and economic health.

The summit, which aims to devise effective solutions to the ongoing security challenges, was attended by key figures such as Vice President Kashim Shettima, former President Muhammadu Buhari, several state governors, service chiefs, and the Inspector General of Police.

Their presence highlights the gravity of the situation and the urgent need for comprehensive and coordinated efforts.

The Sultan’s cautionary message comes as banditry continues to ravage the North-West, resulting in thousands of deaths, massive displacement, and numerous kidnappings.

The agricultural sector has been particularly hard-hit, with many farmers driven off their lands, exacerbating food security concerns.

This critical scenario underscores the importance of the summit and the need for all involved parties to commit to a long-term strategy to restore peace and stability.
