Former Union Bank Employees Arrested for Stealing N4.2m from Deceased Customer’s Account

The Makurdi Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has apprehended two former Union Bank employees, Idah Ogoh and Agbo Okwute, on charges of stealing N4.2 million from the account of a deceased customer.

The arrests occurred on Friday, June 21, 2024, in Makurdi, Benue State, following a petition by the bank regarding fraudulent debits on the account of the late Emmanuel Azer Agenna.

The deceased’s family had contacted the bank to ascertain the account balance for probate processing.

However, they disputed the balance provided, prompting a complaint about unauthorised debits on the account.

An internal investigation by the bank revealed that Ogoh, a former Sales and Service Associate, had procured a debit card for the deceased’s account on May 10, 2023.

Ogoh then handed the card to Okwute, who subsequently delivered it to an accomplice for withdrawals.

The suspects are currently under investigation and will be charged to court upon the completion of the investigation.
