Finidi George has resigned from his role as coach of the Super Eagles, as confirmed by former Super Eagles media officer Toyin Ibitoye in a statement on X.com.
He wrote, “News just in. Finidi George #FinidiGeorge_FG has resigned from his #NGSuperEagles manager position.”
The announcement came following the Nigeria Football Federation’s decision to bring in a foreign coach to oversee him, despite his recent appointment in May.
George, aged 53 and a former Ajax winger, took over after Jose Peseiro’s contract ended in February, having previously served as his assistant for 20 months.
However, disappointing results in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin contributed to his decision to step down.
As a consequence of the NFF’s new appointment, George’s one-year contract has been renegotiated, reducing his reported monthly salary from N15 million to N5 million.
Additionally, the assistants he had selected will be replaced by staff chosen by the incoming foreign coach.
In discussions with Sports Minister John Enoh, George voiced his dissatisfaction with the lack of support from the NFF and raised concerns about the commitment of Nigeria’s top players during the crucial World Cup qualifying matches.
