The Kwara State Governor, Mallam Abdulrazak Abdulrahman has ordered the release of 23 Inmates and the reduction of Life Sentences of 18 others.
The governor gave the directive after he visited all Custodial Centres in the state on June 14, 2024.
This was made known in a statement by the Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Kwara State Command, SC Adegbulugbe Olumide, and obtained by NATIONAL TELESCOPE on Friday.
According to the statement, Governor Abdulrahman the governor’s gesture is to allow them to celebrate the Eid-Kabir festival with their families.
The governor reviewed the cases of 18 inmates serving life sentences, resulting in significant reductions; “10 life sentences were commuted to 21 years imprisonment; 6 life sentences were commuted to 10 years imprisonment; 2 life sentences were commuted to 2 years imprisonment, while one female inmate’s 7-year sentence was reduced to six months imprisonment.”
He also paid the transportation costs for the released inmates to return to their respective destinations.
Governor Abdulrahman’s decision was influenced by considerations of the inmates’ health status and the belief in their potential for rehabilitation.
Mr Danmairomu Shuaib Ayodeji, the Controller of Corrections in Kwara State, expressed gratitude to the governor for his compassionate actions during the event. He encouraged the released inmates to maintain positive behaviours and become exemplary members of their communities, emphasising the importance of avoiding criminal activities.
The statement also commended the collaborative efforts of the Controller General of Corrections, Haliru Nababa, and the State Ministry of Justice. Such initiatives not only improve the welfare of inmates but also help alleviate congestion in custodial centres.
