During the 25th Democracy Day Anniversary Dinner in Abuja, President Bola Tinubu assured Nigerians that the government would implement a new minimum wage that is economically feasible.
Noting the importance of fiscal responsibility, Tinubu stated, “We’ll do what is expected, but we’ll also pay what we can afford. What Nigeria can afford, what you can afford, what I can afford.
“They ask you to cut your coat according to your size, if you have size at all.”
Negotiations between the Federal Government, Organised Private Sector (OPS), and Organised Labour have proposed varying minimum wage figures, including N62,000 and N250,000.
Tinubu’s remarks aimed to balance the need for adequate wages with sustainable economic policies.
Additionally, Tinubu humorously addressed an incident earlier in the day where he tripped while boarding a parade inspection vehicle, jokingly attributing it to a “dobale” (prostration) in honour of democracy.
The dinner event convened several dignitaries, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, and Chief Justice of Nigeria Olukayode Ariwoola, underscoring the significance of the occasion in celebrating Nigeria’s democratic milestones
