Federal legislators representing Akwa Ibom State, led by Paul Ekpo of Etinan Federal Constituency, have called upon the Federal Government to ensure multinational oil companies undertake environmental remediation in the Niger Delta before exiting the country.
Addressing environmental justice concerns in the Niger Delta Region during the June 11, 2024, plenary session, the House of Representatives deliberated on a Motion presented by Mr. Ekpo, with co-sponsorship from Dr. Patrick Umoh of Ikot Ekpene Federal Constituency.
The motion noted the importance of immediate clean-up actions prior to oil companies’ divestment.
Expressing apprehensions regarding the impending divestment, Ekpo under scored the adverse effects of oil spillages on the region’s environment, including agricultural decline, aquatic pollution, and loss of biodiversity.
He stressed the urgency of conducting thorough clean-up operations across affected communities.
Recognising the potential for prolonged environmental degradation and health hazards if remediation efforts are delayed, Ekpo urged the Federal Government to compel oil companies to fulfill their obligation to clean up the Niger Delta Region.
The motion was subsequently referred to the House Committee on Environment for further legislative consideration under the leadership of Speaker Rt. Hon. Tajudden Abbas.
