Unilorin VC Alerts on Electricity Bill Surge to N230m

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, has raised serious concerns over a drastic increase in electricity tariffs imposed by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC).

The university’s monthly electricity bill has soared from N70 million to an alarming N230 million, a situation the VC labels as “unsustainable.”

In a recent email to staff and students, Prof. Egbewole urged the university community to adopt responsible electricity consumption habits and support various cost-saving measures.

He emphasised the urgent need for collective efforts to mitigate the financial strain posed by the steep tariff hike.

To address this challenge, the university is actively exploring alternative power supply solutions.

Plans are underway to incorporate provisions for alternative power sources in new building projects and to develop strategies for reliable alternative power options across all faculties and units.

Prof. Egbewole’s call to action underscores the critical need to manage the university’s electricity consumption more efficiently.

He stressed that the escalating costs could hinder the university’s operations and financial stability if not addressed promptly.

By implementing these measures, the university aims to ensure a more sustainable and economically viable future.

The VC’s appeal highlights the broader implications of rising energy costs on educational institutions and the importance of sustainable energy practices.

Unilorin’s proactive approach to finding alternative energy solutions reflects a commitment to overcoming this financial challenge while maintaining its educational mission.

The University of Ilorin is therefore at a pivotal point in its energy management strategy.

The significant increase in electricity tariffs has prompted immediate and strategic responses from the university administration, emphasising the necessity for sustainable practices and innovative solutions to secure the institution’s future.
