… Committee’s Proposals Await Review
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has decided to postpone its planned strike, initially scheduled for Tuesday, June 11, aimed at demanding a new national minimum wage.
This decision was announced by NLC President Joe Ajaero at the International Labour Conference in Geneva, Switzerland.
Ajaero indicated that the strike is on hold because the proposed minimum wage figures are currently with President Bola Tinubu for approval.
The tripartite committee’s proposals are awaiting the President’s decision, and the NLC’s National Executive Council will review the new figure once it is announced.
This postponement provides temporary relief for Nigerian workers while the minimum wage negotiations remain unresolved.
However, the suspension hints at a potential breakthrough in the discussions.
Earlier, a statement by Segun Imohiosen, the Director of Information and Public Relations, mentioned that the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage has submitted its report to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
The committee was inaugurated by President Bola Tinubu on January 30, 2024, to recommend a new national minimum wage.
The report is expected to be presented to the President once labour leaders return from the International Labour Organisation Conference in Geneva.
Labour unions have been advocating for a new minimum wage, stating that the current ₦30,000 is inadequate due to inflation.
While the government and organised private sector have proposed increasing it to ₦62,000, labour unions find this amount insufficient.
President Tinubu’s review of the committee’s recommendations is anticipated, and his decision will be forwarded to the National Assembly as an executive bill to establish a new minimum wage law.
The outcome will significantly affect Nigerian workers’ livelihoods amidst ongoing economic challenges.
